In Curtain Up on the Avant-garde, curator Jody Blake draws upon the wealth of the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts, along with special loans, to explore how theatre artists also endeavored to break with the past. Focus sections underscore how playwrights and composers targeted social conventions as well as literary and musical standards. Theatre designers’ use of puppetry and collage reveal that modern art strategies transformed the stage. The exhibition will run through June 12.
