The Carver Community Cultural Center Announces 2010-2011 Season

The Carver Community Cultural Center is proud to unveil its line-up of artists for the 2010-2011 season. Whether one is a lover of dance, world music, jazz or soul, this season has something to offer to everyone

Jennifer Holliday
October 23, 2010 at 8 pm
This performance is made possible through generous funding from the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts.
This two-time Grammy Award winner is a vocal powerhouse whose hardy, passionate, throaty and soulful voice touches hearts and leaves her audience flooded with emotions running deep and spirits soaring high.

Ragamala
November 13, 2010 at 8 pm
Rooted in Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form from southern India, Ragamala’s work bridging between cultures both ancient and modern, explores a unique style of living poetry onstage.

Terri Hendrix
December 3, 2010 at 8 pm
One of the most strikingly original singer-songerwriters today, Terri Hendrix’s songs range in style from folk to pop to blues to jazz and all points in between, exploring joy and struggle in equal doses.

Kuumba House Dance Theatre

This performance is made possible through generous funding from Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services.This dance company, dedicated to the presentation and preservation of the cultural expression of African art forms, will present a concert that highlights African cultural heritage and celebrates the African American holiday of Kwanzaa

Tango Buenos Aires

Complexions Contemporary Ballet

Founded by two former Alvin Ailey members, Complexions’ ground breaking mix of methods, styles and cultures has created an entirely new and exciting vision of human movement.

Tia Fuller

Sabor y Memoria: A Musical Feast in Seven Courses is Brian Amador’s newest musical suite about a favorite topic: Food! This concert touches on issues of memory, nostalgia, immigration, sustainability and hunger. Sweet Plantain String Quartet (a favorite from last season) will appear with Sol y Canto in this celebration of Flavor and Memory.

One of the most popular contemporary violinists of modern times and a MacArthur Fellowship winner, Regina Carter’s career has been a veritable crescendo of success that shows no sign of letting up. Her mission: to make a meaningful musical contribution and do it on her own terms.

Angelique Kidjo

Angelique Kidjo, whose work has garnered her four Grammy nominations, has cross-pollinated the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of American R&B, funk, jazz, as well as influences from Europe and Latin America.

Anat Cohen

An established band leader and prolific composer, idiomatically conversant with modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian charo, Argentine tango, and Afro-Cuban styles, Anat Cohen has established herself as one of the primary voices of her generation on both the tenor sax and clarinet.

Black Nativity
December 11 & 12, 2010
A unique creation of the poet and playwright Langston Hughes, Black Nativity is the Christmas story told in narrative, dance, gospel song and folk spirituals. There is no better way to usher in the holiday season.

Season subscriptions for the 11 performances (not including Special Attractions) are available for only $275 per seat and are onsale now! Special Attractions are not included in the season, but may be added individually. Season subscriptions are available through the Carver box office. For more information, please call (210) 207-2234.
