Casual Observer

Opening: Thursday, September 30, 6:00 – 9:00 pm
Fourth in a series of projects derived from his 1997 murder ballad Song 44, Casual Observer will allow ample time for the lackadaisical viewer to convince themselves that something is happening. Visitors to the gallery might even chance upon the artist with guitar, singing a song or two, possibly with collaborators.

Christopher McNulty’s work explores the problem of knowledge and the limitations of Reason, in particular, the mundane ideals that we encounter in our day-to-day lives, and how they structure our understanding of our physical, intellectual, and emotional worlds.

Captivar la Luz: A Latino Experience

This exhibition seeks to explore the “Latino Experience,” a category including Latin life, culture, conflict and/or any social or economic issues. Curator Kathy Vargas, a Professor of Photography at Incarnate Word University, welcomes amateur and professional photographers alike, to express their perspective of the theme. Generously made possible by Zuirch International Properties, Inc. Blue Star LAB is an annex of Blue Star Contemporary Art Center that allows for expanded exhibitions from the Blue Star Main Campus, as well as the promotion of experimental work.

Curated by Bill Fitzgibbons, the latest installment of Blue Star's biannual sculpture exhibition at the San Antonio Botanical Garden will feature the work of acclaimed San Antonio artist George Schroeder. Schroeder's work is known for its physicality, rawness and remarkable elegance, resulting in abstract sculptures that evoke tension within form and ultimately change the space into a definitive visual experience.

The Blue Star Contemporary Art Center will be transformed into an engaging art extravaganza with artist led projects and booths, live music, complimentary refreshments and educational mini-workshops with collaborating partners. Kids, teens, and adults will get hands on experience through art projects centered around the contemporary art community. This exhibition will showcase Florentine artist Ivano Vitali, an ecologist, sculptor and performer who uses printed newsreel that he transforms into thread that he weaves into sculpture; along with Joan Hall, who uses nautical themes and imagery to create mixed media paintings. The artists will be at the opening.

Descendant from an old Texas family steeped in tradition, Marilyn Lanfear is a self-proclaimed “visual storyteller”. She is not married to one technique or medium, preferring instead to let her message inform her artistic process. The result is work that weaves found objects and antiques together with cast lead, limestone, and thousands of mother of pearl buttons to form a visual landscape rich with historical context and poignant subtlety.

Libby Rowe is one of the newest faculty members at UTSA, and creates photographic, mixed media, and interactive work that is often funny and always spot-on. Her work explores topics from femininity to cultural subtext.
Wayne Gilbert

Blue Star LAB
Wayne Gilbert is a Houston-based artist, curator and critic. He has shown his work across Texas and across the world, having been featured in shows from China to Cuba. Wayne is the co-owner and operator of G Gallery in Houston, and recently curated the wildly successful group show Amalgamations 25: 28 Artists for 25 Great Years at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center in the spring of 2010.
