MORE: The Historic Farms and Ranches Complexes Committee of the San Antonio Conservation Society was established as a Special Committee in 2006 after former President of the Society, Joanna Parrish, became concerned that the historic farms and ranches in Bexar County were highly endangered. Working with the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation city archaeologist, Kay Hindes, committee members began surveying the rural areas to update the 1973 Bexar County survey done by AACOG. Of the 56 historic properties originally identified in the 1973 survey, 41 were located and 15 of the properties had been lost. During the process of the survey, 44 additional 19th century historic farm complexes were identified. Approximately 100 historic farms and ranches have currently been identified and located and are in the process of being documented.
Society committee members, with the assistance of the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation, continue to work to locate, identify, photograph and document mid-19th century and early 20th century farm and ranch complexes in Bexar County.
