Camerata Features Living Latin Composers in October
Concerts features music by Osvaldo Golijov, Gabriela Lena Frank and Johannes Brahms
Osvaldo Golijov could be called a superstar composer - his premieres are hotly anticipated and greeted enthusiastically. He grew up in an Eastern European Jewish household in La Plata, Argentina. Born to a piano teacher mother and physician father, Golijov was raised surrounded by classical chamber music, Jewish liturgical and klezmer music, and the new tango of Astor Piazzolla, and that clash of musical influences is a hallmark of his compositions. The work featured on Camerata's program, Tenebrae, combines French Baroque quotations with imitations of tropical frogs and a cello melody thatshould sound "as a object in cosmic orbit."
Gabriela Lena Frank, born in 1972 in Berkeley, California, to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry anda father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, explores her multicultural heritage most ardently through her compositions. She has travelled extensively throughout South America andher pieces reflect and refract her studies of Latin-American folklore, incorporating poetry, mythology, and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own. Her work on Camerata's program, Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout, vividly depicts various characters of the Andes - thechasqui (an Incan running messenger), the llorona (a professional mourner), and the romancero (a gallant young man). Frank also uses the instruments of the string quartet brilliantly to evoke Andean instruments, such as the pan pipes, charango and guitars.
Both the Golijov and Frank works are for string quartet and the musicians performing will be Matthew Zerweck and Sayaka Okada (violins) Emily Freudigman (viola) and Ken Freudigman (cello). All are also musicians with the San Antonio Symphony. Joining them on the second half will be San Antonio Symphony Principal Clarinetist, Ilya Shterenberg, for the Brahms Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115.
Camerata will perform this program three times.
October 14 at 7:30pm in Kerrville at the First Presbyterian Church (800 E. Jefferson)
October 15 at 7:30pm in Boerne at the First United Methodist Church (250 E. James)
October 17 at 3:00pm in San Antonio at the Travis Park United Methodist Church (230 E. Travis)

"Lettice and Lovage" @ The Point Theatre in Ingram
“Lettice and Lovage,” directed by Nancy Reagan, continues its hilarious run on The Point Theatre’s indoor stage. The charming British comedy by Peter Shaffer runs through Oct. 16 with performances Friday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Maggie Meek plays Lettice Douffet, an eccentric tour guide and expert on Elizabethan cuisine and Tudor weaponry. She works at one of Britain’s dullest historic homes and decides to embellish its past after her groups dwindle from boredom.
Lettice’s tours are met with applause, but her success is cut short by Lotte Schoen, played by Louise Kohl Leahy, an inspector from the Preservation Trust who fires her for “gross departures from fact and truth.” Later, the two become fast friends as they enact famous historical trials and executions.
The cast includes Barbara French, Graydon Vaught, Kevin Jones, Shanthi Cleckler, Russell French, Gay Hibdon, and Jaydea House.
Guests may view “Think Ink,” an exhibit of hand-pulled prints by the Johnson Creek Press, in the Gallery at The Point one hour prior to all theatre performances.
For reservations or more information, call the box office at 830-367-5121 or visit www.hcaf.com. The Point Theatre is located at 120 Point Theatre Rd. South in Ingram.

Play: The Arabian Nights, A poetic fable by Mary Zimmerman
Directed by Paul Fillingim
King Shahryar marries, loves, then kills, a young woman each night – until he encounters Scheherazade. To save her life, she entertains the King with tales of love, lust, hilarity, and sorrow for a thousand and one nights. Her ancient tales magically transform the stage from a king’s bedroom in Baghdad through markets, harems, courts, and a crowded privy, and from heights of hilarity to sobering affirmations of shared humanity.

A RETROSPECTIVE LOOK AT ART
ESSENTIAL MATTERS
October 1 – October 31, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 7, 2010, 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry, San Antonio, TX 78202On October 1, 2010
Henry Cardenas will open his retrospective art exhibit reflecting more than 20 years of his artistic career as a painter and sculptor. A RETROSPECTIVE LOOK AT ART-ESSENTIAL MATTERS brings together some of Cardenas’ early works such as his wooden cactus sculpture which won him a award ribbon at the Texas State Fair in Dallas in 1989. The exhibit also includes some of his early paintings. Cardenas’ experiences as a decorated veteran of Vietnam and careers in public service, teaching university classes, traveling, and his family greatly influence his imagination and passion for art. His early years growing up on the Westside of San Antonio continue to inspire his bold use of color, shapes, and forms, and his creative passion to make art. Cardenas’ retirement from a business career several years ago has segued into an artistic career of “just playing with my art stuff” to create beautiful art.
In addition to this Carver exhibit, Cardenas is the featured artist through October 15 at the Institute of Texan Cultures, Smithsonian Affiliate, exhibiting in the Texas Contemporary Artists Series, Curated by Arturo Almeida. Cardenas is a Resident Artist at Little Studio Gallery at La Villita where he also exhibits his paintings and sculptures.
The Carver Community Cultural Center is a multicultural, multidisciplinary performing and visual arts center dedicated to celebrating the diverse cultures of our world, nation and community, with an emphasis on African and African American heritage, by providing challenging artistic presentations, community outreach activities and educational programs.
